If you think something went wrong in your CPS case, try to resolve the issue by talking with your caseworker or their supervisor at your local Division of Children and Family Services (DCFS) office. Most concerns can be addressed directly with your county office. See Q&A below for more detailed information.

Preparation
Are there any steps that must be taken prior to filing a grievance?

Before filing a complaint, you should try to resolve the issue with the child welfare agency by talking directly with the supervisor if you are comfortable.

Submission
How and where to file the grievance?

You can file a complaint and find more information about the process if you contact the Child Welfare Ombudsman by phone or email.

Follow Up
What to expect after filing and how to track the progress of your grievance?

After filing a complaint, the Ombudsman will contact you regarding the next steps. The ombudsmand will decide to either: (1) refer to the child welfare agency; (2) attempt a resolution; or (3) begin an official investigation.

During an investigation, all necessary documents and information will be reviewed in addition to potentially interviewing parties involved in the case. Findings will be communicated to you.
